Summary
(church, strengths and weaknesses, reference to Acts):
We see that the church of Philippi was generous and gave to Paul on
several occasions (4:15). Paul addresses several problems in the church; he
calls them out on selfishness and pride in Phil 3:3. It is also evident that
there was a split because of conflict and Paul urges them to settle their
disagreements (4:2). In 3:2 it can be seen that there are some people preaching
that you needed to be circumcised to be saved, possibly the same Jews who
opposed Paul when he was in Philippi. We read about Paul being in Philippi in
Acts 16:11-40.

Main
ideas, key words and repeated ideas:
REJOICE! Repeatedly the concept of
joy is mentioned. Paul urges the Philippians to be encouraged and have joy in
the midst of adversity and lead lives like that of Christ. A key verse in
Philippians is in 4:4, ‘Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again –
rejoice! Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the
Lord is coming soon.” The life of Jesus is exemplified throughout Philippians
but especially in chapter 2. Paul repeatedly speaks about privilege and
citizenship (1:27, 29; 3:20) these things would have been important to the
original readers who had received the privilege of Roman citizenship.

Character
and nature of God:
In
Philippians 2:6-11 we see such beauty in God’s heart! Jesus is shown as the
selfless humble servant. His humanity and divinity collide in the way God is
shown to be humble and self- emptying. Even just within the trinity this is the
heart. Humility belongs to God as much as exaltation does. God is also shown to
be the provider (14:19). He is the one who brings revelation and understanding
(3:16). God is faithful (1:6) and He is our peace (4:7). It would have been vital for the Philippians
to see God as humble and their peace in time of quarreling and disunity in the
church. God id the God of joy and our joy comes from putting Him first. This is
something they still needed to learn and this experience through who God is.
