Ecclesiastes summary

At first glance Ecclesiastes sounds very negative and much of the text is quite pessimistic. However this book compares world views and perspectives coming to a conclusion that any life without God is meaningless. According to Jewish tradition, Solomon is the author. Throughout Ecclesiastes there is this phrase “all is vanity”, Ecclesiastes clearly shows that without God all is vanity and no matter what you do or have life feels meaningless. The book names many pleasures which still leave the author feeling empty. The conclusion and a basic summary of all Ecclesiastes is found in Ecclesiastes 12:13&14, “Fear God and obey his commands, for this is everyone’s duty. God will judge us for everything we do, including every secret thing, whether good or bad.” We can learn from this book how to live a life which makes a difference and has meaning.
